Attention: Indiana Vehicle Dismantlers and Scrap Metal RecyclersIndiana

During its 2006 session, the Indiana Legislature passed HB 1110, to require vehicle dismantlers and scrap recycling facilities to remove automotive mercury convenience light switches before the vehicle is crushed or shredded.

As part of this program, ELVS will provide education materials and outreach on switch location and removal. ELVS also will provide collection buckets and pay for the cost of shipping and recycling the switches removed by dismantlers and scrap metal recyclers.

In addition, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has a reimbursement program to pay an incentive to recyclers for switch removal. The state will pay recyclers $3 for each mercury convenience light and $5 for each mercury ABS assembly removed after February 24, 2007. For more information on IDEM’s mercury switch program, please contact IDEM’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Technical Assistance at 800.988.7901
