Attention: Maryland Vehicle Dismantlers and Scrap Metal RecyclersMaryland

The Maryland Legislature passed HB 1263, a mercury switch removal act, to require vehicle dismantlers and scrap recycling facilities to remove automotive mercury convenience light switches and mercury-containing ABS assemblies before the vehicle is crushed or shredded.

As part of this law and effective for buckets received after February 15 2010, ELVS will pay a bounty of $4 per automotive mercury convenience switch and $6 for each mercury containing ABS assembly providing recyclers provide documentation stating the year, make, and model from which switches were pulled. These log forms must accompany every return bucket in order to qualify for the incentive. Log forms are also available for download on the right side of this page.

ELVS also provides educational materials on switch location and removal as well as collection buckets. ELVS pays for the shipping and recycling the switches/assemblies removed by dismantlers and scrap metal recyclers.
