Maine
Attention: Maine Vehicle Dismantlers and Scrap Metal Recyclers
PLEASE NOTE THAT AFTER JANUARY 1, 2011 –AUTOMOTIVE MERCURY SWITCHES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AT WESCO IN PORTLAND AND BANGOR -THEY MUST BE SHIPPED TO ELVS.
Effective January 1, 2011, to meet the requirements of both the Maine law and as well as utilize the NVMSRP model, ELVS will provide collection buckets and pay for the cost of shipping and recycling the switches removed by dismantlers and scrap metal recyclers at Maine facilities.
Maine law requires that vehicle dismantlers and scrap recycling facilities remove all automotive mercury switches (i.e. convenience light switches, ABS assemblies, airbag crash sensor modules, as well as, park-heater and hood-tilt switches in Class 6-8 trucks) before the vehicle is crushed or shredded.
Also effective January 1, 2011, ELVS will begin paying a bounty of $4 per automotive mercury switch provided that recyclers furnish documentation identifying the year, make, and model, OR the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), for each vehicle from which switches were pulled. These log forms or VIN forms must accompany every bucket in order to qualify for the incentive. Blank log forms will be included in each bucket and are also available on this website (see side link on this page).
